Joey's Story

Joey's Story
by Sophie Bonin of Lil Baby Buns January 27th, 2002, we finally have a positive pregnancy test result ! After 14 months of trying, testing, taking supplements, having lots of tests done, we made it :o) What a busy year we had ! We were getting married on August 17, now a baby was due on October 6th and we had to add a bedroom and washroom upstairs ! Well, we were strong enough and the love we have for each other helped us through all this !
Then the first BIG day came ! Dany and I were getting married with my daughter Vicky as our flower girl. I was 33 weeks pregnant at that time with a nice belly to show. It was a beautiful but very humid day, and everything went so smoothly ! It really was exactly as I had dreamed of !
5 weeks later, on September 24th at 12 :30am, I got up for yet another trip to the bathroom, but on my way back to bed, I could feel something dripping down my leg ! I thought I got up too fast and wasn’t done peeing, lol ! So I went back to the bathroom, but nothing came out. When I got back to bed, I remembered reading that if you want to be sure your water broke, when you lie down and sit up again, it will leak. So I tried it and boy did it leak ! Dany woke up as I screamed and laughed at the same time. I told him my water broke and I’m going to take a bath, so he could go back to sleep. Yeah, right ! Of course he got up and stayed with me. When I got out of the bathtub, my water was leaking, not dripping any more ! I had to wear 2 pads and still, I had to change them every 5 minutes !
We then woke up Vicky at 1 :00 am, called my mom and drove Vicky there on our way to the hospital. At this point I’m not having any contractions. Once at the hospital, around 1 :30 am, the nurse asked me if I was sure my water broke ? ! Well, of course I’m sure , why do you think I’m here ? ?! ! ! Around 2 :30 am, after doing all their tests, and still no contractions, they told us to seep for the rest of the night and they would induce me in the morning. We did manage to sleep, I knew we had a big day coming !
At 10 :00 am, they induced me and we waited all day without any contractions.... At least I could go outside and take a walk, it was such a beautiful day ! Around 5 :00, the doctor came in and told me I had to have a c-section if the contractions wouldn’t start very soon ! I was terrified, I didn’t want a c-section ! ! Finally, around 5 :30, I started to feel something very light, but the contractions were there ! I’ve never been so happy to have contractions :o) Dany went to get something to eat, of course I didn’t eat anything since the night before, except a craker here and there and some V8 to get some strength.
At 6 :00 pm, the nurse came and told us the power would be out around 8 :00 for about 2 hours, GREAT ! ! Around 6 :30, I started to really feel my contractions, so I tried to take a bath, well it just made things worse for me. I asked the nurse to bring the birth ball and I jumped and rolled on that thing until 9 :00 pm. Dany was really wonderful through all this, he rubbed me like there was no end ! Around 7 :30 pm, I asked for some demerol, which I had refused twice before. At 8 :00 pm, I was 5 cm dilated, they didn’t check too often in case of infection since my water had been broken for such a long time. Around 8 :45, I started asking for the epidural, which I told Dany I did NOT want (before we went to the hospital). Since 2 other women requested it before I did, it seems like forever before he got to my room. While I was waiting for him, I kept hurting more and I am very expressive, so I was yelling and screaming the pain away, and it seemed to help :o)
The nurse told me to lie on the bed and try to gas mask. I used the tube because I couldn’t stand the mask. That helped a lot ! ! But the nurses were discouraged since I was only 5 cm dilated and still had a long way to go, or so they thought ! When the epi guy finally showed up, I was yelling I had to push, the nurse kept saying, don’t push, you still have a long way to go ! Well, the epi guy said, why don’t you check and see how far she is ? the nurse said « you can’t thave the epiduarl, you’re at 9.5 cm, it’s time to push ! » I just put my thumb up, I was so happy ! I went though it without the epi ! ! It was now 9 :15 pm, the doc came in and I asked him to freeze me down there but he couldn’t, the baby’s head was right there. So I started to push, but I couldn’t hold it long enough as it hurt too much. Then I got ahold of myself and started counting to 10 with every push. When the baby came out, almost like a football, the doctor almost dropped him ! The nurse said, watch the baby ! I sat up and grabbed by baby and yelled, don’t drop my baby ! ! I put the baby on my belly and said to Dany « It’s a boy ! ! »
I then told the doctor, it’s not bad, I only pushed half an hour. He said, what do you mean ? It only took 10 minutes ! So, after 3½ hours of labour, our precious Joey was born at 9 :35 pm, Sept. 24, 2002, he weighed 7.01½ pounds and measured 19.5 inches. His head was so perfectly round, I couldn’t beleive it ! We just adore our little bundle of joy
